As the obesity rates have gone up, so have the number of solutions to help people lose weight. Some of these solutions are fads which are knocked to extinction in no time, and some offer more promise.

Diet supplements have become hugely popular today as people search for easy solutions to help with their weight loss. However, these supplements are not actually magic cures and you will still need to put in a lot of the hard work yourself, a.k.a. diet and exercise. These supplements are merely there to help you along and speed up the process and help curb your cravings. You can read Research Verified reviews here about what to consider when choosing a supplement. If you are looking for the latest diet craze to help you lose weight, more and more people are jumping on board with intermittent fasting. And no, this is not the same as starving yourself. But this new popular diet does show a lot of promise.

What Is Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent fasting is more of an eating schedule as opposed to an actual diet. The only restriction placed on you is when you should eat. It involves revolving your diet around periods of eating and periods of fasting. While this may not sound very appealing, it has actually been found to provide many health and weight loss benefits. When you think about it, our ancestors didn’t eat the way we do today. This was usually because food was not always available. There weren’t always supermarkets and homes with refrigerators. People had to eat what they could get when they could get it, and their bodies managed to go long periods without food.

How Does It Work?

Intermittent fasting revolves around the premise of eating for certain periods of time and fasting for certain periods of time – which means no eating. However, during the fasting periods, you are allowed to drink water, tea and coffee without any added sugar.

The cycles of eating and fasting tend to follow three popular approaches:

  • Eat For 8, Fast For 16 – This method is the most popular and easy to follow method. It means only eating for a period of 8 hours a day and then not eating for the remaining 16 hours. This generally involves missing breakfast and only eating between the hours of 1pm and 9pm.
  • Fasting Twice A Week – This method involves eating as you normally would most of the week, and then fasting for a period of 24 hours once or twice a week.
  • The Fast Diet – This approach involves eating normally for 5 days of the week, then on two days (non-consecutive), restricting your calorie intake to only 500-600 calories. The most popular way to follow this method is to have your “fasting” days on Mondays and Thursdays.

The Benefits

Fasting has certain effects on your body, particularly on various hormone levels. Your insulin levels will drop while your human growth hormone (HGH) levels will increase. This will help improve the body’s fat burning capabilities and muscle growth by increasing the body’s breakdown of fat for energy. In other words, fasting for short periods of time actually speeds up your metabolism. This decrease in insulin also protects against insulin resistance which is when the cells of the body do not respond to insulin which results in high blood sugar and puts you at a higher risk for diabetes. Intermittent fasting has also been shown to reduce the risk factors associated with heart disease such as lowering blood pressure and reducing cholesterol levels.

Intermittent fasting provides the ideal recipe for weight loss success. It decreases the number of calories you consume while also increasing the number of calories you burn by speeding up your metabolism. The other health benefits this eating plan provides, make this a diet worth following. And probably the best part is that it is not like other diets at all – you are not restricted in what you are allowed to eat. Of course, healthy choices are always the best choice.
