Nothing takes the enjoyment out of hunting faster than injury. Seasoned hunters practice gun safety and scout the area they will be hunting in. However, most hunters get so involved in their hunt that they forget to hydrate. Dehydration is a common threat that has ruined several hunting trips.

What is Dehydration?

Dehydration is more than lack of water in the body. It is making sure that your electrolyte levels in proper balance. Unbalance electrolyte levels can cause muscle cramps, dizziness, weakness, and lack of endurance. Dehydration can even cause even more serious conditions like heat exhaustion or heat stroke. These can all put an end to your hunting trip.

Warning Signs of Dehydration

The first warning sign that you’ll likely experience is the simplest one – thirst. If you feel thirsty, drink some water. The best approach, is to add an electrolyte drink to your back pack and supplement with water on a regular basis, whether you feel thirsty or not. The fact of the matter is, that if you feel thirsty, you’re in the first stages of dehydration. You increase your normal activity while you are hunting, so be prepared. Keep in mind that you lose about 4 cups of water per hour during exercise in a moderate climate.

Other common signs include fatigue, irritability, dry mouth, headache and strong smelling, dark colored urine.

Altitude Sickness

High altitude speeds up dehydration and causes altitude sickness. To help decrease chances of altitude sickness arrive early to acclimate, drink more water and follow the basic rule climb high, sleep low. 

Getting Rehydrated

Popular sports drinks will replace electrolytes better than water, but those drinks take hours to break down for your body to use. We suggest to throw in a few 4oz NanoHydr8 shooters or add some NanoHydr8 concentrate to your hydration pack to get immediate electrolyte replenishment, sustained energy, and quick muscle recovery. As a side note, beer (and other alcoholic beverages) will not “quench your thirst.” Alcohol is a diuretic actually speeds up dehydration.

If you feel signs of dehydration drink some NanoHydr8 and rest. You should start feeling a difference in about 5 minutes. Gradually start drinking some cold water to help cool your core.

Everyone knows the recommended water intake is around eight glasses a day, but what about when you’re hunting?  Nobody wants to pack in a lot of water that they won’t use. This can quickly leave you in tough shape if you end up dehydrated!  So take advantage of the great options available.
