Recovery Time

After your gastric sleeve surgery, you can go back to work after three weeks post-surgery. This can only happen if your job isn’t super active.

You won’t be able to return to your full range of activity for six weeks following surgery. After this period, try and add exercise to your daily routine.

Let’s look at what types of food you can eat during your recovery.

What You Can Eat During Week One

After your surgery, you will maintain the clear liquid diet you had before your procedure.

This will help you avoid any postoperative complications. Complications could include gastric leakage, diarrhea, constipation, or bowel obstruction.

Give your body time to heal. During this week, drink lots of liquids. If you have a difficult time staying hydrated, ask your doctor about electrolyte drinks. You could try a low-calorie option like Gatorade G2.

Don’t consume beverages with sugar. You don’t want to end up with dumping syndrome when too much sugar enters the small intestine. This will result in diarrhea, fatigue, vomiting, and severe nausea.

Sugar has a ton of empty calories and should get minimized even after week one. Try not to drink coffee during this time. Coffee can contribute to things like dehydration and acid reflux.

Carbonated drinks with sugar and seltzer can cause bloating and gas. Avoid this long term and during week one.

What You Can Eat During Week Two

You can graduate to a full-liquid diet in the second week following surgery. Food options include instant breakfast drinks, cream-based soups, and sugarless nutrition shakes.

You can eat nonfat sugar-free pudding, soft soup noodles, and nonfat plain Greek yogurt. Pick up fruit juices with no pulp. For breakfast, opt for oatmeal.

You might notice your appetite starts to increase during this time. This is normal, but you shouldn’t eat solid foods yet.

Fill up on liquids and avoid fat and sugar. This stage will help you prepare for the following week. Still avoid coffee and carbonated beverages.

What You Can Eat During Week Three

Add puréed and soft foods to your diet this week. Stay mindful as you eat and chew with care. Sugar-free and low-fat foods are acceptable. Look for non-fibrous vegetables and lean protein.

You can begin to increase your protein consumption. Cook up pureed white fish or soft scrambled eggs. If you don’t like puréed lean protein, drink sugarless protein shakes.

Other foods to eat during this time include cottage cheese, silken tofu, and soup. Pick up jars of baby food, canned fruit in juices, and plain Greek yogurt. Enjoy mangos, bananas, or avocados, mashed. You can also eat hummus.

Avoid solid and chunked foods as well as coffee during this week. Don’t add seasoning or spices to your diet; otherwise, you could get heartburn.

What You Can Eat During Week Four

Begin adding solid foods to your diet after one-month post-surgery. Maintain your healthy eating skills.

Avoid high-fat dairy and sugary or fatty foods. Hard to digest foods like nuts, fibrous vegetables, and steaks are off the menu too. Aim to avoid white potatoes, pasta, and other high-carb foods.

You can reintroduce your caffeinated drinks but drink them in moderation. Enjoy sweet potatoes, well-cooked vegetables, fruit, and low-fat cheese. Cook your fish and chicken well. You can enjoy low-sugar cereal for breakfast.

What You Can Eat During Week Five and Beyond

Now that you know you can eat food without complications, make a new standard eating plan. This plan will last long term. Focus on vegetables and lean proteins.

Introduce new foods over time so you can track your body’s reaction. Foods to avoid or eat once in a while include sodas and sugary sweets. Other foods can get incorporated back in if they don’t trigger symptoms.

Choose your food with care. Notice the difference between your emotional appetite and physical hunger. Make sure you don’t overeat because your stomach stretches and adjusts.

Avoid empty calories and instead opt for nutrient-dense foods. Cut out your snacking and instead eat three meals every day.

Drink water throughout the day so you can stay hydrated. Pick up a 64 oz water bottle that you can bring to work with you. Try to finish drinking that amount of water every day. Remember not to drink water or other beverages with your meal.

Establish an exercise routine. You can explore the activities that you enjoy, like dancing, yoga, or swimming. Go for walks at a local nature park.
