Prostate Cancer is the second most common cancer among men in the United States. Your prostate is an organ located beneath your bladder that produces most of the liquid found in your semen. As many as 1 out of 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. 

Your risk of developing prostate increases as you age. Almost 60% of men diagnosed with prostate cancer are 65 or older. It is not common for men under 40 to develop prostate cancer.

Drink Tea and Eat Soybeans 

Isoflavones has been proven to reduce the risk of prostate cancer and can be found in:

  • Tofu
  • Chickpeas
  • Lentils
  • Alfalfa sprouts
  • Peanuts

There is a known link between men who drink green tea extract or supplements with green tea extract and lowering the risk of prostate cancer.

Eat Healthy Fat

A link has been made between animal fat and an increased risk of prostate cancer. If possible replace animal fat found in butter, cheese, and lard with plant-based fats such as:

  • Olive oil
  • Fruit
  • Fresh Vegetables
  • Nuts or seeds 

Quit Smoking 

If you have prostate cancer and smoke, you are more likely to have a recurrence. Smokers have a higher risk of dying if they get cancer.

Eat Fish and Omega-3

Omega-3 and fatty acids help reduce your risk of developing prostate cancer. Omega-3 can be found in certain fish like mackerel, salmon, trout, tuna, and sardines. In a recent study they found  men that consume high levels of omega-3 fatty acids are less likely to develop prostate cancer. 

Recognize The Power of Supplements

The best prostate supplements contain high concentrations of nutrients and vitamins which are found in fruit and vegetables. Green vegetables help your body break down carcinogens, which are cancer-causing substances. Nutrient-rich diets help slow the spread of cancer. 

Eat Red Fruits and Vegetables

Red foods owe their bright color to a very powerful antioxidant known as lycopene. It has been proven that men who consumed lycopene have a lower risk of prostate cancer. Fruits that contain lycopene such as tomatoes and watermelon help reduce the risk of prostate cancer. In a 2018 study from Europe they suggest consuming these red fruits and vegetables when they are ripest if they are picked too early they will not contain as much lycopene.

Ensure You’re Exercising Daily

Obesity and excess weight are directly related to an increased risk of aggressive prostate cancer. Having a daily exercise routine can help you maintain your weight. You can also improve your metabolism and muscle mass. Suggested exercises:

  • Swim
  • Run
  • Bike
  • Walk 

Speak With Your Medical Provider 

Talk to your doctor about your risk level of developing prostate cancer. If you are already experiencing symptoms such as; difficulty urinating, blood in your semen or urine, or pelvic or rectal discomfort. You could also discuss:

  • Your family history
  • Medical exams necessary for your age
